Withstand the Whatnot

COUNTERZINE Gives the term "college rock" all new meaning. Very personal record of GBV-inspired DIY pop gems chronicling the internal and external struggles of trying to figure out your life and find stability in all forms at an age and in an environment where doing so is immensely difficult. Sean's grown since then, but as a compelling and infectious document of an important developmental period, this still holds up very well nearly a decade and a half later. Favorite track: Little Africa.

about

After almost 10 years of completely homemade releases, "Withstand the Whatnot" was my first professionally mastered and released album. The album is currently out of print, so I've made it available as a cheap digital download, because too many people like it for me to let it gather dust!

"Withstand the Whatnot" is basically a chronicle of my undergrad years @ a private Baptist university. Please remember while listening to it that I was a different person back then, and so were you! I had a lot of fun making this album, and I hope that you have fun listening to it.

credits

released March 16, 2004

"Withstand the Whatnot" was written, recorded, and mixed by yours truly from April 2001 to November 2003 on a Yamaha MT8X eight-channel cassette multi-track, a Compaq PC with Goldwave on it, and four cheap omni-directional Radio Shack microphones.

Work on this record was done at my apartment in Waco, the Glennis McCrary Music Building and Moody Computer Lab at Baylor University in Waco, my mother's house in Beaumont, two of David Lobel's previous houses in Austin and Niema Quick's old apartment in Austin.

Various interludes on this album features the chit-chat of Gabby Thomas, Natasha Greene, my younger brother Khadeem Charles, my younger cousin Nassiera Jones Jr., a friend of Niema Quick's who was REALLY worried about her French final @ the time, and Aisha Sims. David Lobel played the saxophones & Davis Comeau played the celli. Every other sound you hear on this record was me.

The album was then mastered by the generous and talented Jimmy Ether in Georgia from November 2003 to January 2004. Then, Adrian Quesasa wrecked shop on the artwork/layout. All songs have been copyright controlled in my name since November 2003, so write your own songs.

"Withstand the Whatnot" is dedicated to the memory of Pshawn Marie LeBlue.
